The Silicon Review
28 January, 2019

The South Korean multinational conglomerate, Samsung has decided to replace its plastic packaging with “environmentallyfriendly substances” such as recycled/bio-based plastics.

Samsung Electronics made the announcement on Sunday and said it will begin the replacement in the first half of the year.

All Samsung products such as mobiles phones, tablets, wearables, home appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, TVs, and washing machines will be packed using recycled materials which comes from non-fossil fuel sources like starch or sugar cane.

Furthermore, Samsung will also be modifying the design of its phone chargers by swapping the glossy exterior with a matte finish as well as removing the plastic films, thereby reducing the usage of plastic.

Gyeong-bin Jeon, head of Samsung’s Global Customer Satisfaction Center, has revealedthat even if the cost increases, the company will use environmentally sustainable materials. He further added that Samsung is working towards addressing “society’s environmental issues such as resource depletion and plastic wastes,” and the company wants to reduce the waste that it produces.

Samsung has created an internal team to deal with the issue of plastic reduction and has tasked them to come up with innovative ideas for minimizing plastic use in its products.

By 2020, Samsung wants to use only paper packaging certified by global environmental organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative in its products. Moreover, the company plans to use 500,000 tons of recycled plastics and collect 7.5 million tons of discarded products by 2030.
