Google Maps no longer shows the flat earth

Google Maps no longer shows the flat earth
The Silicon Review
04 August, 2018

Google Maps looks more realistic now. The Google Maps has changed its perspective from the traditional flat map view to the more realistic globe view. If we zoom out the Google Maps now, we will find out that the map of the earth is presented as a Globe, with landmasses of the appropriate size.

When earlier it was represented as a flat map view, it was impossible to showcase every landmass with exact size on a relative scale. As the map view compensates for the flattening of the globe, landmarks get distorted. Everything looks more correct now, Greenland is no more the size of Africa!

Now when Google Maps will be seen on Desktops, it will show the appropriate relative size of land masses. Google has been adding new features to its Maps service this week, from matching users with the restaurants of their preferences to adding battery percentage in Location Sharing so that friends can know if the battery is going to die. Now the latest news is that Google has dumped the flat view of earth to come up with a fully 3D Globe view. It is a relatively minor change compared to all other new features Google recently added, but it is an important one!
