Irish Silk Board Admin Pleads Guilty To Narcotics Charges
The Silicon Review
08 October, 2018

The admin of one the largest dark web marketplaces, Gary Davis pleaded guilty over drug trafficking charges on Friday by US District Judge Jesse Furman. The Irish man is going to face a maximum sentence of 20 years of imprisonment.

30-years-old Gary Davis is also known as Libertas and was one of the administrators of Silk Road, which was a then-largest marketplace for illegal drugs and other goods. Silk Road was hosted on the dark web, hidden from the normal surface web. The website was used by thousands of people to sell and buy drugs and other illegal goods and services. It was then one of the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplaces on the Internet used by vendors in more than 10 countries in North America and Europe.

According to Gary, his work for Silk Road was to help the website in keeping live and running at an ease. He also said providing customer support was a part of his work too. He used to keep other site admins updated about every single issue reported by Silk Road users and he used to get paid a weekly salary for this job.

In 2013 after the law enforcement raided Silk Road’s servers, Gary was indicted by FBI and the website went down. The founder of Silk Road, Ross William Ulbricht was also arrested and sentenced lifetime imprisonment.

Gary Davis tried fighting extradition in Irish courts, arguing that incarceration in the U.S. might result in affecting his mental health and might get his life in danger. However, Ireland’s Supreme Court rejected those arguments, and Gary was extradited to the U.S.
