Google is turning off Android’s Nearby Notifications

Google launched Nearbyin 2015. It is an Android feature that allows phones and tablets to automatically connect with devices and places very close around them and lets them share information withothers or receive deals from stores that they're in. The Android users typically get pinged when they enter those stores or any other locations with beacons.

Since the launch of the feature, it has become a marketing strategy for business-owners to promote their products or services but it doesn’t serve as a user-friendly guide.  Google has decided to turn off Nearby Notifications after it realized that users were receiving too much spam. Instead of providing relevant details, Nearby often sent unnecessary notifications to the users. Google didn’t expect this to happen; its initial goal was to provide users with useful information proactively. Nearby was intended to provide information about free Wi-Fi, telling about places to visit like museums, libraries or sharing public transport details etc.

It appears that the feature didn’t serve its purpose well and users kept searching for ways to disable the Nearby Notifications. They complained of the annoying service as it pestered them by showing more ads. But, the marketers were the ones who were pretty happy as they had a chance to send ads to the users directly based on locations.

Google said that theyhave a high standard for the content quality that they deliver to users.The feature will be disabled by December 6th as confirmed by Google.
